Hand, Wrist, Elbow, & Shoulder Specialist
Dr. Shaan Patel, MD, BA is an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He specializes in evaluating and treating upper extremity needs, including the shoulder, elbow, and hand.
Following his parent’s immigration from India in 1983, Dr. Patel was born and raised in Hamilton, Alabama. At the age of twelve, he began working at his family’s budget motel. A highly motivated individual, he subsequently graduated from Hamilton High School with the prestigious honor of being class valedictorian.
Continuing his educational journey, he attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Pre-Medicine. Dr. Patel was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society and the Omicron Delta Epsilon Economic Honor Society. He then attended medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and graduated with the distinction of being a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
Dr. Patel completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Florida Orthopedic Institute and University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. He was appointed the honor of being chief orthopedic resident during his final year of training. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Patel further specialized his training through a hand and upper extremity fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic and MetroHealth in Cleveland, Ohio; then a shoulder and elbow fellowship internationally at the Sydney Shoulder Research Institute in Sydney, Australia.
Additional accolades include memberships in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), and Indian American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (IASES). He has published multiple articles in the orthopedic surgery literature, studying shoulder replacement, elbow fractures, hand ligament and tendon reconstructions, and other upper extremity problems. Dr. Patel capitalizes on being at the forefront of medicine through close analysis of the latest research, national meeting attendance and presentations, and utilizing a worldwide network of colleagues.
